Breast milk is nutritionally ideal for almost all infants with few exceptions. Reasons why breast milk is better than formula include cost, emotional development between mother and infant, proper portioning, and superior immune development.
I'm sure it hurts, its inconvenient, and kind of carnal. However, you definitely want your kid to be smart and well nourished!
A recent study was published at the Federal University of Pelotas in Brazil. This prospective cohort study sampled 3,000 babies and tracked three processes throughout their lifetimes; I.Q., years of education completed, and monetary status. The children who's mothers fed them breast milk were shown to have an average of 3.76 I.Q. points higher than formula fed babies. The breast fed children attended school for an average of 0.91 years more than formula fed babies and the breast fed babies had higher incomes by the age of 30.
In the US, it is progressively and intentionally becoming more convenient for mothers to breast feed their children. Working mothers are given breaks from work for breast feeding and WIC now even provides breast pumps for mothers at no cost.
As a highly developed nation, the US has one of the highest rates of infant mortality in the world. Adequate nutrition can only help change this.
NPR has an excellent podcast about this;
