I would like to talk about quinoa. It’s not a super food and here’s why… because super foods don’t exist. We are homo sapien omnivores (and some vegetarians), and we desire and live more happily with a nearly infinite array of food options. Some foods contain more nutrients than other foods, but they don’t deserve designated super powers. The secret to adequate nutrition isn’t quinoa, it’s that there isn’t one.
While I’m dismounting my soap box, I’d like to mention a few beneficial attributes of this famous grain:
Quinoa is good if you like it. Because of the protein and fiber content, you’ll feel much fuller for a longer period of time than eating something white. Quinoa also as a distinct flavor and texture making it really fun to cook with! However, let’s remember, it’s still a carbohydrate clocking in at 4 calories per gram no matter how “crunchy” it is. In other words, have some, but be quite mindful of your portion.
